A White Christmas in Buckhead Indeed

For the first time since 1882, Atlanta sees accumulating snow on Christmas day.  A very Merry Christmas to all and enjoy the winter wonderland this evening and on Sunday.  It should be a fun day for sledding.

OliverMcMillan Takes Over Streets of Buckhead

Today Atlanta developer Ben Carter told the AJC he is being pushed aside on the Streets of Buckhead so the San Diego firm OliverMcMillan can take over and complete the stalled project that was supposed to be completed in 2009. The financing for this project has been an ongoing topic of conversation and one many believed would never end. According to the attached AJC article, his investors opted to bring in new blood to see the project through. While I was hoping for a "Central Park" style design concept, I am thrilled about the prospect of the cranes moving again and the Streets of Buckhead finally opening. Here is the full AJC article.

A White Christmas in Buckhead?

Could we see a white Christmas this year in Buckhead?  According to every weather report I can find, it's looking pretty good.  WSBTV.com shows a 60% chance of a wintry mix on Saturday.  Growing up in Macon, about 90 miles south of Atlanta we never saw a white Christmas, so this is pretty exciting.  I'll have pictures if it happens!

Local Three Restaurant Opens in Buckhead

This morning I was fortunate to have the opportunity to sit down with chef Chris Hall of Local Three Kitchen & Bar, a new restaurant that has just opened in Buckhead.  Local Three has taken over the spot once held by Joel Brasserie in the Piazza at Paces development.  Chris Hall opened Local Three along with his partners Todd Mussman and Ryan Turner.  Names sound familiar?  They should, these same guys also run Muss & Turner's in Smyrna.

The concept behind Local Three was to create a neighborhood restaurant where you can bring your family, dressed as you are, and have a wonderful meal and not have to pay a ton of money for it.  Their menu is fresh, local when it can be, and most importantly, Seasonal.  The menu will change regularly, at least once a month as well as featuring favorites from "Chef's" bag of tricks. It's also a great place for happy hour with over 100 beers both in the bottle and on draught, 12 white wines by the glass, 12 red wines by the glass, and about 50 bottles to choose from...not to mention an impressive liquor selection.

On Sundays Local Three will serve Brunch like no other.  Diners will be waltzed through one of the finest kitchens in the South choosing biscuits, gravy, steak, eggs and all things that mean brunch literally right out of the oven.  The amazing part...it's $18.93 per person for as much as you can eat and half price for children under 10.

When you are there, be sure and look around the place.  Everything has a story including the bar that was built from an oak tree that fell on Mt Paran Road, 3 tables built from an oak tree that fell on Peachtree Battle Ave. during the September 2009 floods, a table built from a 1979 Knights of Revelry Mardi Gras float, a "rural barcode" on the wall, and the majority of tables in the dining room were reclaimed from a home being torn down on Bolton Road.  Tracy Hartley designed and built all of these pieces that make Local Three a very special place to spend time.

I can speak for the "North Avenue Upgrade"...It was fabulous and the service was personal...just what I'm looking for.   Be sure and check them out.  Their website www.LocalThree.com is under construction but does allow you to make a reservation through Open Table as well as view their menu.

Holiday Lights In and Around Atlanta

Each year as we get closer and closer to Christmas, I get anxious about when and where we are going to go to see the holiday lights.  As a kid growing up in Macon, GA there was one place to go.  We would go eat dinner at Finchers Barbecue on Houston Avenue and then head across the street and see the most amazing light and character collection I had ever seen.  Santa Claus was outside to greet us and I never once wished for more.

In Buckhead I haven't quite been able to find the same experience but I know it's out there.  There are a few neighborhoods worth noting that certainly rise to the occasion.  In Brookhaven there is a home off of Peachtree Dunwoody that absolutely stuffs their front yard with holiday inflatables.  There is also a home on Mt Paran that fills up the front yard with inflatables.  The kids love both of these homes and up until this point, they are the only ones we have seen.

This year we are going to branch out a little bit and take it up a few notches.  I think our plan will be to go see Holiday in Lights at Centennial Olympic Park.  The 21 acre park is transformed into a winter wonderland and also features an outdoor ice skating rink.  The lights are on and open to the public through and including Christmas Day, 7am-11pm.  Learn more at www.centennialpark.com/events/holiday.html.

The next two options are a tossup and we haven't decided which one we will do.

Lake Lanier Islands has their Magical Nights of Lights which they say is the world's largest light extravaganza.  It is a 7 mile tour of animated holiday light displays, and you can visit with you know who at the end.  They also have games, pony rides and carnival rides awaiting you at the end of the tour.  They offer dining and lodging packages as well as individual vehicle tickets.  Up until December 20th, the cost is $40.00 per car (9 person limit) Monday - Thursday, and $60.00 Friday - Sunday.  I believe the prices go up December 20th-25th.  It takes about an hour to get there from Atlanta.  You can view all of their information at www.lakelanierislands.com/mnol.php

Calloway Gardens has been putting on Fantasy in Lights since 1992 which is probably the year I first went there.  It is a sight to be seen and a memory that you will hold forever.  It features over 12 holiday scenes along a 5 mile drive with music to bring it all together.  You have the choice to ride in your car or ride on the Jolly Trolley.  Calloway Gardens is located southwest of Atlanta and takes about an hour and a half to get there.  To date over 2 million people have driven through the production.  The production uses over 8 million lights and if connected would stretch 731 miles.  Check out other Fascinating Facts on their website.  You will need to visit their website to reserve your tickets.  Tickets are $22 per adult, $11 for children over 5 years of age, and free for children 5 and under.  They also offer accommodation packages for an overnight stay.  You can view all of their information at www.callawaygardens.com/gardens/events/winter-fantasy-in-lights.aspx.

If you have made it this far, please feel free to comment and recommend holiday light attractions in and around Atlanta.  I know my readers would appreciate it.
